What is Thyroid Surgery?
Thyroid surgery is a surgical procedure in which all or part of your thyroid gland is removed. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in your lower neck. Part of the endocrine system, your thyroid helps control your metabolism.
When is Thyroid Surgery Needed?
Thyroid surgery is used to treat a variety of thyroid conditions. For example, it can be used to remove nodules, cysts, goiters and tumors on the thyroid. It can also be used to treat hyperthyroidism or to remove cancer of the thyroid.
How is Thyroid Surgery Performed?
During thyroid surgery, your surgeon will create a small cut in your neck. He or she will then carefully remove all or part of your thyroid without damaging the blood vessels nearby. Once your thyroid is removed, your surgeon will place a small catheter to help drain extra blood and fluids and then close up the area with stitches. The entire procedure can take up to four hours.
